How does the Crazyhouse League work?
Once registered and approved to participate in the ZH team league, you should receive an invite by e-mail to the lichess4545 Slack where everything is arranged and you can chat with your teammates and other league members. Please be patient as these e-mail invites tend to go out in batches.
Please be sure to accept this invite to join Slack. Secondly, change your username on the Lichess4545 Slack to match your Lichess username. Thirdly, send a direct message with the word "link" to crazybot, the crazyhouse bot, and you are good to go!
Unless agreed otherwise, pairings are released each Wednesday at 16:00 UTC. You will be alerted firstly by a direct message on Lichess, secondly by a direct message on Slack to you, your opponent and your respective captains where you can get in touch to arrange a time, and thirdly by a link to pairings released in the #crazyhouse channel. You have 24 hours to tell your opponent which times you would like to play (at a minimum offer 3 different times on at least 2 different days) or responding in kind to their offer. List all times in UTC. One player should post the agreed time in #crazyhouse-scheduling pinging your opponent (e.g. @Zher0 - @kostasvl Thursday 1900 — although shorter forms of this sometimes suffice e.g. just "Thursday 1900"). Crazybot should respond to this message which confirms it has been recorded and posted to the ZH team league website. Even if you don't arrange your match in advance and are about to play immediately, post the current day and time in #crazyhouse-scheduling, so crazybot will pick up the games automatically. (In case of unforeseen circumstances, this arrangement can be amended by contacting your opponent, agreeing and posting up a new time.) Have a good game! After the game, the results should automatically update to the ZH team league website, but in case not, the winner (or either player) should post the links to the games and the result of the match in #crazyhouse-games. Come back the following week for your next pairing.
Note: The overriding principle of this document is to create a basic framework so that the League can function smoothly and the rules are not meant to be punitive. To that effect, moderators may implement the rules with some degree of discretion or change rules if needed in order to improve the League.
I. Player Eligibility
To be eligible as a player, you must have a Lichess account with an established (non-provisional) crazyhouse rating and accept your invite to the Lichess4545 Slack. Players with provisional ratings are asked to get their rating established as soon as possible. Accounts which have ever been marked by Lichess on any game or on any alt are ineligible to play. This rule derives from the zero-tolerance to cheating or trolling on the Lichess4545 Slack. Players must respect other rules of the Lichess4545 Slack (which all boil down to respecting other users) on whose platform and under whose auspices this league is organised. To register, players must fill out a registration form on the website. If you join mid-season you will likely be an alt and the majority of invites to Slack will tend to be sent out before each new season starts. Alts are very valuable to the smooth running of the league.
The Crazyhouse League has been a Swiss Team League since Season 4. Each week, you will play 2 games — one as White and one as Black — against the corresponding board of your opponent team.
Every game point counts towards your team score. If your team wins 8-4 or 7-5, both count as a match win for your team that week, securing 2 match points). In case of 6-6, that would be a match draw and both teams score 1 match point. Game points are the tiebreak between teams on equal match scores.
If you are unavailable any one week, please mark yourself as such at least 12 hours before pairings are released and alert your team captain. An alternate will be drafted in for you. (If players think they might be unavailable more than once in a season, they should sign up for that season as an alternate.) If no suitable alternate can be found, then the match will be a scheduling draw. However, if the availability was notified late, and no alt can be found, then this will result in a forfeit.
Teams selection will be done in such a way and by such a procedure so as to ensure as far as possible that all teams are of roughly equal strength, and so long as this condition is satisfied that players are teamed up with those they would like to be teamed up with.
The League moderators are the league founder Zher0, okei, kostasvl, colwem & the variants legend FischyVishy. You can reach the moderators by making a public post in the #crazyhouse channel or better still summoning them with the phrase: @crazybot summon mods. Moderators will make binding decisions regarding: disputes between players, rule clarifications, player forfeiture, any other issue of importance to the League. The time control for all games will be determined at the start of each season. All games must be rated games on lichess.org. It is both you and your opponent’s responsibility to make sure the games are played fairly.
Once the pairings for a round have been released, each player should attempt to contact their opponent as soon as possible (at least within 24 hours). Each player must offer a reasonable range of times (in UTC) on different days to their opponent (at a minimum 3 times on 2 separate days). If a time cannot be agreed upon, a result will be determined by the moderators based on the effort put forth by each player to find a suitable time. If a player is unavailable to make such a reasonable effort to schedule their games, they should notify mods ahead of the pairing for that round. If an agreed time cannot be reached after both players have made their initial offers, both players should continue to offer times until an agreed time is found. If no such agreed time is found after reasonable effort from both players, then the result will be called a scheduling draw. All players must confirm their scheduled game time by posting it in #crazyhouse-scheduling, with @ for both player names (e.g. @Zher0 - @kostasvl Thursday 1900 — although shorter forms of this sometimes suffice e.g. just "Thursday 1900"). IV. No Response Policy
If a player has not made contact with their opponent within 24 hours, they must inform the mods immediately. The mods will award a forfeit win if no available times are communicated subsequently or if they are unable to draft in an alt at short notice. The player claiming the forfeit win must first send such a warning (within 48 hours) and later provide a screenshot of the conversation on Slack with lack of response or lack of adequate response.
V. No-Show Policy
If either player is not online at the appointed time, they will have a grace period of 20 minutes to appear, otherwise they will forfeit the game. If either player is online, but does not challenge or accept the challenge of their opponent within 20 minutes of the arranged time, then they will forfeit the game. If one of the opponents is online at the appointed time but the other one is not online, then crazybot will automatically send a message to the online player offering them to claim the forfeit win. In case this message is not received, or the circumstances are more complicated, please inform the moderators as soon as possible with relevant screenshots e.g. scheduling discussion, or time-stamp screenshot showing their opponent is offline or that they have issued a challenge, but their opponent has not accepted, or that they have issued a challenge, but their opponent has declined it.
Both no-show and lack of adequate response may earn the offending player a yellow card even if they did not result in a forfeit. If a player receives two yellow cards during a season, then they lose their permanent place on their team and begin the subsequent season with a yellow card. If they receive their first yellow card in the final round, then this carries over into next season, but otherwise yellow cards are cleared at the end of each season.
VI. Cheating Policy
If you suspect someone of cheating, use the report button on Lichess as per the Lichess cheating policy: https://en.lichess.org/qa/258/all-about-cheating-questions-and-answers. If someone is marked as a cheater on Lichess, the mods will withdraw them from the tournament. Players that are strongly believed by all mods to have cheated during a league game will be disqualified regardless of account status on Lichess. The threshold for this belief must be extremely high.
VII. Game Play Policy
Correct Game Format: Both players are responsible to ensure they are playing the correct time control and the correct variant (Crazyhouse) and that the game is rated. In case of superficial errors, the games will count anyway, but may result in a warning.
No Friendly Draws: Prearranged matches and friendly draw offers before the contest has properly begun are strictly forbidden.
No “Claim Victory” or “Claim Draw” Feature: Players are not permitted to use the “Claim Victory” or “Claim Draw” features on Lichess, for instance in the event of an opponent disconnect. Any such claim will result in an immediate forfeit.
No Obligation to Accept Take-Backs: Take-Backs are permitted, but your opponent has no obligation to accept. It is your responsibility not to mouse-slip. There is enough time to be certain of your moves.
Intentional mis-use or over-use of draw offers or take-back requests will result in a warning or yellow card.
VIII. Function of the Moderators
The moderators seek to ensure that the league continues to run smoothly and remains a positive experience for everyone involved. Players are encouraged to bring up any issues or potential improvements they might identify with a moderator. Moderators have a final say in all matters and will try to use their discretion wisely. In case of disagreement on major issues, they will go with the majority decision amongst themselves.
